Quite possibly the webs most exciting feature to date. This accordion slite panel is a great example of AJAX in action. Once loaded it responds almost instantly with very little communication back to the server. This can be used for animated effects like this, for quick database accesses online, or for more advanced online application like Microsoft Office Live.

The difference comes down to validation, and site stability. By scripting sites by hand we know how to get sites to look either exactly the same across mulitiple browsers or at least close enough that people won't notice a difference. And with 100% valid code search engines automatically give you a higher ranking because it's easier for them to read. On the other hand I have found little advantage in using a WYSIWYG, after all, one of the main reasons for hiring a web-designer instead of doing it yourself, is that a web designer know the ins-and-outs of websites. He doesn't have to let a program make coding decisions for him.
