Portfolio :: Larsens Fine Candies
Overview
Larsen's is a small candy shop in Eugene, OR. The owner was interested in featuring his fine morsel's on the internet to pick up more business on a national scale. He wanted to feature things like custom chocolates for corporate events and special occasions. Larsens also ran booths at local events such as the Lane County Fair and the Scandinavian Festival, my goal was to keep his customers informed and help draw in new customers that might happen by on the internet.
The Shopping Cart
The software I used on this site was Commerce-CGI, written in perl, PHP with a flatfile database. Due to the fact that Larsens has a small selection of about 150 products they didn't need a MySQL DB and he kept his inventory in Excel so it was easily converted into a Pipe delimited database.
Mini Cart
One of the features I setup for this Shopping Cart is a way for customers to track orders inline when they were browsing and adding other items. This gave them a list of what they've added and with a subtotal to let them know about how much they were spending.
Menu System
I wanted a menu that was simple and straight forward but that also hilighted the variety of chocolate that my client had to offer. Two of my clients chocolates are actually rather hard to find, Haystacks and Peppermint bark are just now gaining popularity on a grander scale. Because of the way we set up the database I could have url queries, so I created a file of categories that could be readily pulled and but into a url query string, making a very simple template that used a name, value pair: Name of the link, with value of the string.

This simple setup on the address was also setup to add search built in down the road.
